Boutique art hotel in Galle Fort

Fort Bazaar

Fort Bazaar

Galle
, Sri Lanka

This handsome merchant’s home-turned-boutique hotel is superbly positioned within a UNESCO-listed 16th century fort. Drawing upon the Fort’s Moorish history, interiors have a distinctly Middle Eastern vibe and feature eye-catching floor tiles, ethnic mosaic cushions and pendant lamps. The buzzy restaurant and bar, luxurious spa and 18 spacious bedrooms – that overlook a calm central courtyard – makes a very welcoming retreat from the bustling cobbled streets of Galle Fort.

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s historic Galle Fort, along Church Street, the fort’s museums, shops, cafes and key landmarks can be reached with a five minute walk. The town offers very easy access to stunning local beaches for swimming, diving and surfing, and for embarking on coastal cruises to observe whales and dolphins in the deep sea.

15 bedrooms sit either side of a long, cobbled courtyard while 3 indulgently spacious suites open onto private terraces with views over the fort’s red-tiled rooftops. Rooms are styled with a mix of vintage and modern furniture, some with exposed brick walls. The penthouse has a private terrace.

All rooms are equipped with the following amenities:
Air conditioning | Fan | Mosquito net | Satellite TV | Mini bar | In-room tea and coffee | Safety deposit box | Universal wall sockets | Torch | Toiletries | Hair dryer | Bathrobes | Wi-Fi | Baby cots (2) and extra rollaway single beds (4) are available on request

Dining

The Church Street Social’s menu draws upon contemporary flavours, alongside an all-day menu of international dishes using sustainably sourced produce. Highlights include hearty local curries, South-east Asian set plates, and fresh seafood. In-house guests can dine in the air-conditioned dining room or bar, which is also open to the general public. The kitchen is open daily from 7:00am until 10:30pm. For departures earlier than 7:00am a packed breakfast can be organised and for late arrivals, by prior request, we can arrange for the kitchen to remain open. Meals can be catered according to dietary requirements. The rooftop restaurant offers tapas-style Sri Lankan dishes and craft cocktails. The breakfast thali is a guest favourite.

Our Recommendation

Galle Fort, a treasure trove of antiquities, shops and cafés, is best explored on foot, either on your own or, with a knowledgeable guide for a deeper insight into the Fort’s rich history. If you’re interested in a hands-on cultural interaction, you could craft traditional masks at the workshop of a notable local artist or combine culture with food in an exciting Sri Lankan cooking experience with the inhouse chef. Galle’s sunny beaches offer quiet, tropical vibes and surfing hotspots include Dewata, Midigama and Weligama, while whale watching cruises embark from Mirissa’s vibrant local harbour.

If the deep blue seas excite you, explore the mysterious shipwrecks and enchanting coral reefs at the bottom of the ocean, in a daytime (or night-time!) dive from the nearby dive centre. Peddle through Unawatuna’s verdant paddy and coconut palm-dominated surroundings on a guided bicycle tour or immerse yourself in a jungle yoga class. Close to Koggala Lake is a lowland tea plantation, Hundungoda, offering a fascinating estate tour as it is one of the only plantations to grow white tea.
