The north lies firmly off the beaten track, waiting to be rediscovered after years of political troubles ended in 2009. The region is the heartland of Tamil and Hindu culture, whose architecture, language, arts and cuisine give it a distinct flavour.

Ornate multicoloured towers of Hindu temples, secluded beaches with swaying palmyra and coconut palms (often all to yourself), and shallow shimmering seas dotted with tropical paradise islands await those who venture to this corner of Sri Lanka.

It is not as developed as the more popular destinations further south, but if you want a more authentic experience, the north provides ample opportunity for a few days of gentle exploration.
