A fascinating small hotel within its very own fort

Ranvas

Ranvas

Nagaur
, Rajasthan
, India

Over many years, the fort has been painstakingly and brilliantly restored to its former splendour. The brainchild of The Maharaja of Jodhpur, restoring this exquisitely beautiful 500 year old fort has been one of his dreams for many years and finally, it has come to fruition, in all its gleaming glory and is now opening its doors and embracing anyone who’d like to visit. The colours are all soft, muted and easy on the eye and the whole place is as fun by day as it is romantic at night.

Destination

This stunning hotel lies within the ramparts of Nagaur’s magnificent Ahhichatracharh Fort, on the edge of the Thar Desert. Over many years, this exquisitely beautiful fort has been painstakingly and brilliantly restored to its former glory, through the efforts of the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

Accommodation

Ranvas (formerly the ‘abode’ of the queens) comprises 10 beautifully restored havelis surrounding a pretty courtyard and pool, within a palace complex inside the fort walls. Each haveli is entirely different in shape, size and design and comprises either 2, 3 or 4 rooms and suites surrounding inner courtyards and covered verandahs and with upstairs terraces. They have all been decorated entirely in keeping with their origins, use and design, whilst at the same time modern bathrooms and all modern comforts and amenities have been installed.

The 27 rooms are made up of twin and double bedded rooms. They fall into three categories: Deluxe Queen, Deluxe King and Royal Suite and combinations of all rooms are to be found in each haveli. If travelling as a group of friends, it’s ideal to take over your own, private haveli which will accommodate groups of varying sizes.

Royal Suites- located on the top floor of each Haveli. Each suite has a spacious bedroom, private seating area and an open deck.
Deluxe Kings– located on the ground floor of each Haveli. Each bedroom features a spacious bedroom and private courtyard area.
Deluxe Queens– located on the ground floor of each Haveli. Each features Queen sized double bedroom opens onto the haveli courtyard and living area

All rooms have air-conditioning, heating and complimentary wi-fi c. They have overhead fans, safes, bathrobes provided and ensuite bathrooms (showers only). There are rooms on the low floors but, due to the design, of the building, wheelchair access could be tricky in some havelis. Hot water bottles are provided on particularly cold nights. Hot water is plentiful and provided by geyser. There are no TVs or DVD players in the rooms.
All suites are on the first floor and have private balconies.

Dining

There are 2 restaurants – Baradari and Amar Darbar. That Baradari is a delightful pillared, open-sided restaurant with an al fresco terrace. It serves delicious local Mughal Sufi cuisine and other international dishes. Amar Darbar is a cosy indoor dining room with a great atmosphere and ideal for the colder evenings, with fine dining and menus inspired by Ranis of the past. Table d’hote, and a la carte menus available. Continental, Oriental and Indian food are all offered. Beer, wine and spirits are available.

Experiences

There can be few places in the world where one stays in one’s own, virtually private fort, and a spectacularly grand one at that; where one can take an evening stroll all around the ramparts, gazing down on busy city life outside the walls whilst looking in across a quiet pastoral scene. By day, wander through a gate, and enter a world of years gone by to explore the fort, unhassled by anyone but your fellow guests.

Why we love this place

Ranvas fits perfectly into a ‘desert’ itinerary and adds an exciting 1 or 2 night stop in tours around the Marwar region. It can be combined with Chhatrasagar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Rohet very well.

Playing host to the World Sufi Festival each February it transforms into a bustling tented village and comes alive with music, song and dance – truly inspirational.

Our Recommendation

In your own, virtually private fort, take an evening stroll all around the ramparts, gazing down on busy city life outside the walls. By day, wander through a gate, and enter a world of years gone by to explore the fort, unhassled. Ranvas is a place as fun by day as it is romantic at night and makes the perfect break en route to Bikaner or Jodhpur!
