Nepal's colourful festivals are vibrant sensory combinations of music, dance, faith and merry-making

Religious Festivals

Nepal has several spectacular festivals like Dassain and Shiv Raatri. These colourful festivals are an important part of contemporary Nepalese culture, and a sensory treat for the visitor. While Hindu festivals in Nepal share the same foundations as their Indian counterparts, Nepalese commemorations often carry their own distinct flavour.Dassain’s ten-day festivities are celebrated in most parts of Nepal, concluding with mass sacrifices in Kathmandu’s Kot courtyard near Durbar Square on the ninth day, Durga Puja.Shiv Raatri or ‘Shiva?s Night’ is celebrated with bonfires in Kathmandu and Pashupatinath.
