The main aim of the many turtle conservation projects that centre around the turtle nesting sites near Kosgoda is to monitor local sea turtle activity and conserve the nesting sites. Our particular favourite is the Victor Hasselblad Centre, which is oldest and among the most reputed organisations involved in conservation. At the hatchery you can see five species of turtles-Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Apart from hatchlings kept in tanks before they are old enough to be released back in the wild, there are occasionally injured turtles undergoing treatments.
