Enjoy life on Srinagar’s lakes

Life around the lakes in Srinagar, especially Dal Lake, is truly unique and picturesque.

Staying on the famous houseboats on the popular Dal and Nagin Lakes is the best way to expernce the serene beauty of the city. It was the British who literally floated the idea of houseboats on these lakes to escape the heat of the plains, but modern boats now provide the visitors with eco-friendly, environmentally sensitive yet comfortable options to stay in Srinagar. Houseboats are often beautifully crafted and have intricate wooden carvings.

The Dal Lake is famous for its Shikaras and the ‘floating’ market, the only one of its kind in India. Shikaras are traditional wooden boats for transportation, fishing, and even as floating markets. A Shikara ride is a must-do activity, offering serene views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Commerce on the lake takes place on these Shikaras as local traders sell fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, providing a visual feast of colour for visitors. The lake also has floating gardens, on small, man-made islands where vegetables and flowers are cultivated. They add a unique charm to the lake.

Srinagar’s culture is rich and diverse, with influences from Kashmiri, Persian, and Mughal traditions. The people are known for their hospitality and warmth. Traditional Kashmiri cuisine includes dishes like Rogan Josh, Yakhni, and various types of bread like Lavasa and Sheermal.
