The Abhaneri Step Well (sometimes referred to as Chand Baori), is a remarkable architectural marvel built during the 8th-9th century. It is one of the deepest and largest stepwells in India, extending approximately 30 meters into the ground. It is located on the route connecting Agra and Jaipur, which makes it a convenient stop on the Golden Triangle itinerary.
Its 3,500 steps arranged in a mesmerizing geometric pattern, descend 13 stories deep into a large water reservoir at the bottom. This inverted pyramid-style structure of Indian step wells is designed to conserve water and provide a cool retreat from the intense summer heat. Stepwells also served as a community gathering place and played a significant role in religious and ceremonial activities.
Abhaneri is a visual delight as light and shadow on the geometrical steps brings great photo opportunities. The structure also has intricate stone carvings.
Adjacent to the step well is the Harshat Mata Temple, dedicated to the goddess of joy and happiness. This temple was built around the same time as the stepwell.
