One of India’s most visited ancient monument, Ellora is a complex of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves near Aurangabad.
Ellora’s monasteries and temples were dug side by side in the wall of a high basalt cliff from A.D. 600 to 1000. and extend over more than 2 km. The Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) is a remarkable example of the rock-cut temples of India on account of its striking proportions, elaborate workmanship, architectural content and sculptural ornamentation.
The complex is much more than a unique artistic creation and a technological marvel. With its adjacent sanctuaries devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, it illustrates the spirit of religious tolerance that was prevalent in ancient India.
