Sporting some of the best beaches in India, Gokarna is Goa’s laid-back, chilled-out cousin. The best beaches are just south of the town. Om beach stretches several kilometres and has shady sections perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Kudle beach is another good option, being the longest and widest beach in town.
Away from the beaches lies the other half of Gokarna, a sacred Hindu pilgrim town. With its old temples and a lively bazaar, this part of town is a glimpse into the world of local pilgrims and ceremonies of faith.
When you’ve had your fill of relaxing on the beach, explore the shrines, visit the Mirjan Fort and the rock formations at Yana or opt for a trek through the forested hills. Not far away is the estuary inviting the intrepid traveller to explore its amazing mangrove forests and wetland birds.
