This grand temple complex at the heart of Madurai, the ancient South Indian city was mostly erected in the 17th century under the Nayaka rulers when Madurai was an independent kingdom. The city is the epitome of a South Indian ‘temple-city’. The temple’s towering gateways, swathed in coloured figures, rise up to 60m.
The grand pillared Celestial Pavilion is all that remains today of the Nayaka Palace.
