Bandhavgarh Photo Tour

Bandhavgarh Photo Tour

Join this small-group photography tour led by expert photographer Oliver Wright to the jungles of Bandhavgarh National Park. Bandhavgarh is one of the best places in the world to photograph wild tigers, home to a thriving tiger population of 135 resident tigers.

Along with tigers, Bandhavgarh is blessed with a wide array of mammal and bird life (250+ species), all of which present never-ending photo opportunities. The support cast includes Leopards, Jungle Cats, Sloth Bears and Dholes (Wild Dogs) and a variety of prey species like Sambhar deer, Barking deer, Spotted deer (Chital), Nilgai, Chinkara and Langur monkeys. The park’s ancient landscape includes the atmospheric ruins of the Bandhavgarh Fort which make for spectacular backdrops for wildlife photography.

This tour is ideal for wildlife lovers and photographers of all levels who want to hone their photography skills and spend time in the Indian jungles with expert guides. Our visits to Bandhavgarh have always been productive and rewarding.

April is perhaps the best month for tiger and wildlife photography in central India. The weather is hot and dry, but peak summer heat is still to come. Sparse vegetation and warm temperatures increase chances of photographing tigers and other wildlife as they frequent watering holes. Tigers love cooling down in water, and once they find a good spot they’ll spend hours there, happy to pose for lucky, delighted photographers.

The tour is led by Oliver Wright and Sumit Sahai. Oliver will be on hand to provide guidance and tuition both in the field and back at the hotel, on technical, compositional and creative aspects.

Sumit will use his knowledge and experience to get the group in the right place at the right time, maximizing the number of tiger sightings and other species, and to advice on animal behaviour and photography in the jungles of India.

After every safari, there will be opportunities to discuss your experiences with the hosts, and get feedback on your images should you wish to do so.

The tour is limited to a maximum of 9 guests, which allows everyone to enjoy time with the hosts.

Days 3-7: Photo Safaris

For the next five days, we’ll enjoy morning and evening safaris in Bandhavgarh National Park in our quest for photographic opportunities.

The morning safari begins around 0530-0600 and lasts up to 1030-1100. (Exact timings to be confirmed near the date). During the morning safari, guests enjoy a picnic breakfast provided by the lodge at the designated rest spot within the reserve.

Returning to our lodge after the morning safari, there is time to enjoy the pool, relax under a shady tree or do a spot of birdwatching in the lodge grounds before you take lunch at your convenience.

Your photography host and tour leader will be at hand during the day to answer questions, review photos and offer advice to help you make the most of the trip.

The afternoon safari begins around 1430-1500, and lasts up to dusk (approx. 1730).

In the wildlife reserves of central India, safaris are not allowed in the main zones on Wednesday afternoons, so we will visit the buffer zones instead. The buffer zones are no less lucrative when it comes to tiger sightings, as rising tiger numbers have led to some tigers establishing territories here.

Returning from our afternoon safaris, there is time to relax and refresh before we meet as a group for beer, laughs, dinner and an informal review of how the day’s photography went (not necessarily in that order).

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8: Bandhavgarh-Jabalpur-Delhi

This morning, we shall take the last safari of our tour. In order to catch our return flights to Delhi this evening, we may need to leave the reserve a bit earlier than closing time to give us enough time to refresh, pack our gears, have brunch and check out of the lodge.

We’ll drive to Jabalpur Airport, along with the tour leader and photography host. On arrival in Delhi, we’ll transfer to our hotel to spend our last evening on the tour. There will be time for a final round of beers, and a review of the tour over dinner.

Breakfast, Dinner
Day 9: Departure

After breakfast, depending on flight timings, you will be transferred to the international airport for your return international flight.

Note: If you have opted for tour extensions on either side of the photography tour, you’ll be provided with details of connections and extension arrangements separately.
