Snow Leopards & Lynxes

Snow Leopards & Lynxes

Snow leopards are so elusive that they are called ‘Ghosts of the Mountains’. For a long time, sighting one was the privilege of those embarking on serious mountain expeditions. During winter, snow leopards and their prey base descend from the high Himalayas to altitudes that are more accessible to keen wildlife enthusiasts.

The Eurasian lynx and the Pallas’ cat are enigmatic and beautiful cat species that are only found high up in the Himalayas, and sightings of these never fail to bring a big smile on everyone’s faces.

This tour endeavours to spot these elusive cats in their remote rocky abodes, along with several other rare high-altitude wildlife species.

This tour requires a good level of physical fitness. Time needs to be spent to acclimatise to high altitudes. Winters in Ladakh are extremely harsh, with temperatures well below freezing point. We will have the help of professional wildlife spotters to guide us to the right places to spot wildlife. The daily walking/trekking distances are moderate, but in tough weather conditions.

The focus of this tour is on wildlife sightings, rather than luxury. Some of our accommodation will be simple, clean and warm home stays. Home cooked food will be served.

Our group will be accompanied by a team of expert trackers from the local communities. They have an intimate knowledge of the terrain and snow leopard behaviour. With our help, they are earning their fair share of tourism revenue, while helping us get the most out of our visit to their land. We use homestays and local experts not just for convenience and expertise but for building strong relationships with these remote communities whose goodwill and care is the best security for snow leopards and indeed, all wildlife here.

For those looking for a real adventure and a very special wildlife experience, this is an excellent tour.

Day 1: Arrival in Leh

The tour begins in Leh on Day 1.

We recommend that you fly to Leh from Delhi, from where there are several early morning flights to choose from. Note that flights to Leh only operate during mornings due to the prevalent weather conditions. If you are travelling from another airport, or taking other flights, please ensure they arrive by 1030 on Day 1 of the tour. Note that international or domestic flights are not included in the tour price.

Upon arrival in Leh, transfer to your hotel where you’ll receive a warm welcome and tea. Leh’s high altitude (~3,500 metres) means it is essential to acclimatise. Relaxing at the hotel for the rest of the day, admire the Himalayan views.

Lunch, Dinner
Day 2:Leh Acclimatisation

A full day for acclimatisation.

Depending on how well you are acclimatising, you may choose to rest at the hotel today, or take a gentle walk in Leh during the evening.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Leh - Hanle

After an early breakfast, drive to Hanle (05 hours) and check in at your home stay.

Hanle would be freezing cold and during winters the temperature will vary from -7 till -15 degree. Our comfortable homestay is the best in Hanle, and has heated rooms. Note that the wash rooms are shared and they use dry toilets.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Days 4&5: Hanle
We will spend two days in the area looking for the very rare Pallas’ cat. There are good chances of seeing other Himalayan specialities such as Tibetan Argali sheep, Tibetan Snow Cock, Tibetan Grey Wolf, Tibetan Sand Fox, Tibetan Gazelle and some rare birds.

After breakfast, spend the morning spotting wildlife in Hanle.

Later drive back to Leh (05 hours).

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7: Leh - Ulley

After an early breakfast, drive to Ulley village (80 kms / 2 hours) and check in at your lodge.

Days 8-12: Snow Leopard Quest

Our snow leopard quest starts in earnest with five full days of tracking the snow leopard and its prey base. The snow leopards and prey descend to lower altitudes in winter and if you’re lucky, you’ll actually see snow leopards either perched high in the rocks or balanced on a near vertical ridge.

Our expert local guides help maximise our chances of sightings.

There are also good chances of spotting the prey species including blue sheep, ibex, urial, woolly hares and pikas. Other smaller predators such as mountain weasels, stone martens are also present. Tibetan wolves and Eurasian Lynx are extremely elusive but are occasionally spotted here. Lammergeiers, Himalayan Griffons and Golden eagles can often be spotted soaring above the grey craggs.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Days 13-15: Eurasian Lynx

After breakfast on Day 13, depart from Ulley and drive to the Wari La area (120 kms / 03 hours) and check into your village homestay.

Explore the area in search of elusive Eurasian Lynx for the rest of Day 13, and the following two days.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 16: Return to Leh

After spending the last morning in the Wari La area, drive back to Leh (02 hours).

Visit Thiksey Monastery and other local sights if time permits to cap off our sojourn in the spectacular region of Ladakh. Hopefully, sightings of all the major species will materialise, and some great memoris and photographs will be taken back home.

Tonight, we enjoy our last group dinner in the hotel.
