Highland capital Kandy was the last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings

Kandy

Sri Lanka’s highland capital Kandy is the repository of the famous ‘Tooth Relic’ of the Buddha, enshrined in the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, which along with the large artificial lake is the heart of the city.

Kandy is also known as the “Royal City” because it was the last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings during the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and only ceded to the British in 1815. Each year in July/August, one of Asia’s greatest cultural pageants, Esala Perahera takes place here.
