Nestled in the idyllic northern coast of Kerala is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered – Neeleshwar. Unlike its busier southern counterparts, Neeleshwar exudes a sense of serenity and relaxation, perfect for those looking to take it slow. Take a stroll through its quaint little market or immerse yourself in the vibrant culture at its local mosque or temple. Here, you’ll experience the true essence of rural life and get to interact with local fishermen, who play an integral part in the community.
The pristine beaches in Neeleshwar offer a sense of calm and peace.
Traditional culture is kept alive through a series of colourful festivals, with the Theyyam being a standout event. You’ll feast your eyes on elegantly dressed dancers performing a mesmerizing dance of the gods. And of course, the Snake Festival is not to be missed, where local women from the fishing community play a vital role.
Just north of Neeleshwar lies the fascinating 17th century Bekal Fort, the largest fort in Kerala. The fort appears to emerge from the sea. Almost three-quarters of its exterior is in contact with water. The observation tower built by Tipu Sultan at the centre of the fort offers views of the coastline and nearby towns. The fort’s zigzag entrance and surrounding trenches reveal its defensive strategy. Apertures on the outer walls were designed to defend the fort effectively from naval attacks.
