The Anawilundewa Wetlands are a unique ecological haven covering an area of 1,397 hectares. It is one of Sri Lanka’s six designated Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance.
The sanctuary has three distinct ecosystems: forest wetlands (including mangrove and freshwater swamps), the coast’s saltwater ecosystem, and freshwater lakes. This varied environment is the nesting and breeding ground for hundreds of bird species. The wetlands are home to more than 150 species of birds, 20 species of mammals, 70 species of butterflies, and over 50% of Sri Lanka’s freshwater fish species.
The wetlands are sustained by an ancient system of giant manmade tanks built in the 12th century, which form a complex irrigation system that supports paddy fields and local vegetation. These tanks also provide a natural habitat for the various species of fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians found here.
