The Hoolock Gibbon is India’s only ape, and its loud vocalisations are among the most memorable sounds in any Indian forest.

The Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary is an isolated patch of evergreen forest in Assam. It is the only Indian sanctuary with seven primate species: four macaque species (stump-tailed, rhesus, northern pig-tailed and Assamese), slow loris and capped langur give company to the gibbon. Other mammals include elephant, leopard, leopard cat, sambar, barking deer, jungle cat, wild boar and civet. It has 219 bird species, and 211 butterfly species. Indian Rock Python and a variety of other snakes are also found.
