Women rulers, old bazaars, delectable cuisine and a refined culture

Savour Bhopal’s unique culture

Bhopal is a fascinating amalgam of scenic beauty, historical attractions and modern urban planning. Steeped in rich history and an intriguing past, Bhopal is split in two by a pair of lakes, each with a contrasting cityscape. Towards the North lies the old city, a fascinating area of mosques, serpentine alleys, chowks, exotic havelis and crowded bazaars. To the South of the two lakes is the new Bhopal-a well-planned, spacious and green city. Wide roads, tree-lined avenues, quiet neighbourhoods, upmarket shopping complexes, plush hotels and restaurants are some of its salient features.

The city was founded in the 11th century by the King of Malwa, Raja Bhoja. The most glorious phase of Bhopal’s history was heralded by the Begums, who ruled the city for over a hundred years. In the 19th century, Bhopal was a rare exception among royal states, ruled by a succession of progressive Muslim Begums, or Queens. During their reign, some remarkable buildings were built in Bhopal, such as the massive Taj-ul Masjid, said to be the largest mosque in India, or the lavish Shaukat Mahal, a fabulous fusion of Indo-Islamic, Gothic and French Bourbon styles. The Begums were great reformists and patrons of education, art, culture and public works.

Bhopal is a hidden gem with a fascinating mix of history, old bazaars, delectable cuisine and a refined culture of its own. Dotted with ancient monuments, palaces, religious shrines and numerous museums Bhopal is a leading destination for tourists to central India.
