Unique setting, elegant style

Ahilya by the Sea

Ahilya by the Sea

Goa
, India

This fabulous boutique ‘villa’ hotel is a hugely welcome addition to the Goan hotel scene. Situated at the end of Coco beach, with waves from the Arabian Sea/Indian ocean tumbling into the sea wall that separates the hotel from the beach (not a swimming beach), Ahilya by the Sea has a unique and glorious setting.

The hotel itself consists of four Portuguese style villas made of hand hewn local red laterite rock, one tower room which is intertwined with an ancient beachfront banyan tree, making it feel like more of a ‘treehouse’ & one small partially sea view room called the Music room. The villas are surrounded by lush landscaped gardens with 2 swimming pools, one next to the sea wall – the ultimate infinity pool – and one surrounded by the garden. The interiors are relaxed and inviting and home to a fascinating collection of personal antiques and Goan art. There are many shaded verandahs for relaxing with a book, or relaxing spots to lie back and admire the views, search for dolphins and let the sea breezes waft over you.

Destination

Situated just an hour from the airport, at the east end of Coco Beach in North Goa, on Dolphin (Aguada) Bay, with the waves tumbling into the sea wall that separates the hotel from the beach, Ahilya by the Sea has a unique and glorious setting. Just a 10 minute stroll from the quiet village of Nerul, these waters provide excellent local fishing and it is no surprise that the beach is used by local fishermen on a daily basis.

All the popular north Goa beaches are just a short drive away, as are the historic fortifications of Aguada Fort and Reis Magos Fort.

Accommodation

There are 9 spacious rooms, all with spectacular sea views, divided amongst three villas, and 1 Tiny Arjun Tree house overlooking the sea and a small partially sea view Music room

The Sunset Villa has 4 bedrooms (3 ensuite and a bedroom with a private bathroom across a corridor). The Sunrise Villa has 3 ensuite bedrooms. The Trindade Suite is on the first floor of the Leela Villa and has two terraces, separate bedroom and sitting room. Arjun’s Tower is a small and charming room with ensuite bathroom, sitting room and terrace. It’s an artist’s studio with a beautiful view of the sea which the family rents out when the hotel is full. The Music room is a new addition – a charming room with a partial view of the sea. It does not have an ensuite bathroom, but the bathroom is just adjacent to the room.

Each room is named after a painting by Antonio Xavier Trindade who was considered ‘the Rembrandt of the East’ and who was the grandfather of the present owner. The interiors are home to a fascinating collection of personal antiques and Goan art. There are no Interconnecting rooms at Ahilya by the Sea. There are low floor rooms with easy access for wheelchairs. All rooms are non-smoking, air-conditioned, have overhead fans, hair dryers, bathrobes, a safe and internet access. The rooms do not have TV / DVD players. There are showers, but no bath tubs

Dining

Table d’hôte and à la carte menus are available, serving Indian, Continental and Goan Food. Meals are taken in different places according to the weather, the time and the amount of people but suffice it to say that whether you eat inside in the airy dining area or al fresco in a carefully chosen spot, dining here will always be a treat and an event to savour!

Experiences

A perfect ‘takeover’ place due to its small size with only 9 rooms in 3 villas. 2 pools, glorious sea views, verdant lawns all make this an ideal outdoor entertaining venue – all the while gazing out across the sea and being enveloped by the charm, hospitality and vitality of Goan culture, cuisine and wine. Easily accessed and with so much to do, this is a wonderful ‘long party’ place. Copious local entertainment possible.

Why we love this place

An enchanting mix of Indonesian and Goan style, Ahilya by the Sea was built on the site of the old Portuguese custom houses, and boasts stunning views of the sea entrance to Old Goa.

About your host

The Trindade family is famous for its connections to the arts and the idea behind the hotel is to recreate the glorious styles of Old Goa but with a nod to more modern, comfortable amenities. Ahilya by the Sea emerged as a result of two families merging in marriage with the Trindade family providing the idyllic location and the Holkars providing years of hoteliering expertise at Ahilya Fort. As a result of this union, various family members have got together and created Ahilya by the Sea, therein bringing the intimacy, sophistication and family experience so well refined at Ahilya Fort to this unique family home.
