As you walk into The Rohet House, you are welcomed by beautiful colours. Chic pastels of the lounge extend into the alfresco terrace and turquoise tiled swimming pool. Vibrant flowers from the garden scent the air. As you take a seat on the charming wicker furniture and relax in the cool lounge, sip your drink of choice, accompanied by a sweet or savoury treat.

The high walls surrounding The Rohet House ensure that you are ensconced in a private, precious and personal space. The building’s inherent ‘blush’ red, brown and pink tonalities of Jodhpur Sandstone (Chittar Patthar) and Red Ochre (Geru) are counted, colloquially, amongst the trademark shades of the city and also represent the many moods of the desert. A keen eye for design is evident all throughout the property and the families’ adoration for Lord Krishna comes through in a motif that runs through the hand-painted frescoes in every superbly decorated bedroom. Gourmet cuisine is served in the onsite restaurant.

Destination

The Blue City and The Gateway to the Desert are two of the most popular monikers for Jodhpur, a city that’s best known for the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort that rises above the old town. Set in the stark landscape of the desert, this city is a myriad of old mansions and palaces, temples and bustling bazaars, making it a shopper’s delight. Known for its royal food traditions and more recently its street food, Jodhpur promises to enliven all the senses with its superlative combination of experiences.

Accommodation

Each room at The Rohet House is spacious and individually styled in its own theme of colours and design. No two rooms are the same and although each vie for attention, they all have tasteful decor and either pool or garden views.

Six sumptuously furnished, 550-750 square feet suites feature an artful mix of locally woven rugs, block-printed throws and cushions, and fanciful fabrics. Each suite has a unique hand-painted fresco depicting a small scene in the mythical life of Krishna, a king-size bed and an enormous hand-dyed silk headboard. Smaller standard rooms number two and each is a delightful mix of modern furniture with traditional Rajasthani artwork and a feature wall with a hand-painted fresco. Ensuite bathrooms have a walk-in shower, twin sinks and made-in-India Forest Essentials bath products. You’ll also find free WiFi, tea and Nespresso coffee, air-conditioning and a TV.

Dining

The Rohet House takes its food and beverage offering well beyond the signature family-recipe Rajasthani thali that it is most famous for. Meal times are designated and served in the restaurant, tucked away in the back garden. You can choose your favourite herb from the herb garden and have it featured it your meal. The set menu changes daily and features recipes that have been lovingly created, over the years, by the erstwhile lady of the house, Late Thakurani Jayendra Kumari, a well-known local culinary expert and author. The ambience in the restaurant is regal and stylish, adorned with chandeliers, antique mirrors, traditional pink Makrana stone and fresh flowers. The furnishing includes lounge tables, long sofa benches and independent chairs that create an ideal setting for big and small gatherings.

Experiences

Exclusive excursions into the old city, curated shopping and street food trails and early morning walks to the market or visiting temples are some of the activities that one can enjoy while at The Rohet House. A day’s visit to Rohet Garh and a Village Safari is also bookable locally. It is one of The Rohet House’s signature experiences, that allows guests to feel the very pulse of rural Rajasthan. Visit homes of the villagers to learn about their lives, like the Bishnois often called the ‘premier ecologists of the world’ who enjoy a special relationship with the black buck antelope and a rare and protected species. One can also encounter Raikas (shepherds) with their glorious costumes, and the Paliwals and Meghwals, the Brahmin farmers and weavers.

The Equestrian Program at The Rohet House is among the finest in the country. The stables in Rohet Garh house the best specimens of the Marwari breed of horses and one can get a sense of their sheer strength and freedom in the vast, virgin wilderness around Rohet.

Learn how to make Laal Maas, Ker Sangri, Lasan (garlic) Chutney, breads made from millet flour and other Rajasthani delicacies in a culinary workshop conducted by the trained chef at The Rohet House and inspired by the Late Thakurani Sahiba Jayendra Kumari’s cook books and hand written recipes. You can choose to observe or partake in the cooking itself but either way sample the delicacies at a special dinner.

About your host

The Rohet House was established in 1969, by the Late Thakur Manvendra Singh and Late Thakurani Jayendra Kumari as their family home in the city. The next generation are the current owners; Sidharth and Rashmi Singh along with their son Avijit who carry on the family’s legacy of warm and friendly hospitality as well as an astute sense of refinement, quiet opulence and intelligent restraint. As a result, The Rohet House expertly balances the traditional and the contemporary, presenting itself as an invigorating modern sanctuary with traditional undertones.

In addition to The Rohet House, Rohet Garh in Rohet, just over an hour from Jodhpur, Mihir Garh, a purpose-built boutique hotel on a sand dune and the Rohet Wilderness Camp are operated under the brand House of Rohet, ably headed by the young and dynamic Avijit, a trained hotelier who has interned in prestigious hotels around the world. Along with his parents, he expertly manages all the properties.

The family is passionate about their heritage and culture and endeavour to meet each guest in person. Conversations with them reflect stories not only of their ancestry and links to the land but also promise to regale with tales of bravery, expeditions and horse riding and breeding as well.

The House of Rohet family has had ties with the region and community for generations, and there are many ways that the House of Rohet work with and support them. This is in the form of employment, supporting local businesses, supporting local artisans, organising medical camps, supporting local schools and giving back to the community. The story of heritage permeates not just to the buildings but also in showcasing the traditional family recipes as well as village walks allowing a glimpse in to rural Rajasthan. The family were the pioneers of the concept of The Village Safari that created a perfect example of how responsible tourism involving the local community creates shared value. The family continues to be active in the upliftment of the community with various projects undertaken annually.
