The Bygone Era In The Heart Of Modern Jodhpur

Ratan Vilas

Ratan Vilas

Jodhpur
, Rajasthan
, India

Tucked away from hectic Indian street life, on a substantial tract of land shaded by a canopy of seasoned trees, sits the Ratan Vilas Jodhpur. Weaving through the pillars of this erstwhile family mansion and spilling onto the neatly-manicured lawns and secluded courtyards are stories of Rajput nobility and tales of the bygone era.

Located in the pulsating heart of town, the Ratan Vilas Jodhpur is a mere 10 minutes away from the Sadar Market and its chaotic traditional Indian Bazaar charm. A 20-minute drive away from the hotel rests the formidable Mehrangarh Fort that towers over the Blue City.

Accommodation

Each one of the guest rooms narrate the tale of the elegant mansion and its noble lineage through vintage furnishings interspersed with delicate Indian motifs and arresting sepia photographs.

Enjoy a beverage in the courtyard on a cool evening, or sharpen your quill over an antique desk in your room- there are plenty of ways to soak in the tranquillity.

Dining

The cuisine here is a mix of traditional Indian flavours and continental fares. The dishes presented before guests will cater to the most discerning of palates without compromising on the experience of savouring family recipes passed down generations.

Enjoy meals in the air-conditioned dining room overlooking the lush gardens or al fresco in the gardens amongst trees or along the parapet with the hotel’s red sandstone façade in the background. In the winters, huddle around fire braziers with a beverage in hand and make delightful conversations with lilting Rajasthani music, played live, adding to the ambience.

Pick from an enticing spread of continental and Indian dishes for breakfast, with a glass of freshly-squeezed juice and whole fruits to the side. The a la carte lunch and dinner menus are replete with traditional home-cooked meals and continental fares, many of which have cemented themselves as firm favourites of the hotel’s repeat guests. If you have a craving for a bite or two sometime between meals, snacks are available throughout the day.

About your host

Ratan Vilas Jodhpur, a heritage hotel today, was once the private home of Maharaj Ratan Singh.

Maharaj Ratan Singh (1887 – 1978) was a Rajput nobleman from Raoti, Jodhpur. He belonged to the indomitable Rathore clan, who were the rulers of Marwar region of south-western Rajasthan.

Having excelled in horsemanship as a young man, Maharaj Ratan Singh, at just 16 years of age, travelled to England to attend the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. He was then serving as an Aide de Camp to his uncle Lt. Gen. Sir Pertab Singhji, Maharaja of the princely state of Idar.

Later, having evolved into a prolific Polo player with the handicap of 8, Maharaj Ratan Singh moved on from Jodhpur to serve as the Home Minister to the princely state of Kishengarh. Upon his return from Kishengarh, he decided to settle down and make a home – Ratan Vilas – for himself and his future generations.

The great-grandson of Maharaj Ratan Singhji, Brijraj Singh and Brijraj’s wife Namrata Singh, will be your hosts at Hotel Ratan Vilas. Brijraj and Namrata continue to live in a part of the building that was previously the Zenana (ladies’ private section). Through the years, they have lovingly treated the main building and gardens to charming additions to assure a more comfortable stay without losing the inherent old-world charm and fusion of style and tastes that define Ratan Vilas.

Their investment, indeed their philosophy as is evocative of Rajput hospitality, has been to focus on enhancing their guests’ experience rather than adding more rooms. The result is a tasteful, personally-run heritage hotel in Jodhpur where the attention to detail is second to none and the hospitality, homely without being intrusive.
