Trinity

Trinity

Kochi
, Kerala
, India

Trinity may be 150 years old but the contemporary interiors with style rooted in quirky art pieces, and clean lines could make you travel to any cosmopolitan city right away. The experience is that of a sumptuous heritage boutique hotel, decorated with contemporary art as well as antiques from around India. The eight rooms of the hotel are distinct despite the Art Deco theme that runs throughout. Minimalistic cement flooring accented by clean designs in wood for the furnishings is the core of the design. Dash of colours and canvasses is what brings the difference to every corner in Trinity.

Art is central to Trinity and the other hotels of the umbrella brand, Malabar Escapes. Both contemporary and famous artists have found a space on the walls. In the case of Trinity, the Roof Garden Suite has lithographs by ‘India’s Picasso’, its most famous artist, M.F Husain.

Destination

Fort Kochi is the historical heart around the commercial Ernakulam in Kerala. Dominated by Dutch, British and the Portuguese at different times in history, the town is a veritable history lesson with varied remnants in every corner. The port town is known for wonderfully restored and lovingly preserved mansions in the form of heritage hotels. The town can be your base to explore the backwaters and lesser-treaded beaches as well as double up as a historical enclave to know Kerala better.

A short walk off Parade Road in the city, lies Trinity. An old bungalow that stands shy of a small garden, three massive old trees define the edges and centre of Trinity and also the reason why myriad birds nest here and are always in chorus. Trinity devotedly follows the design principle of Malabar House in its clean lines and simple interiors, while the original bungalow that houses three rooms and suites, has been fashioned to work around its nooks, elevations, and width, the new rooms are an extension and have a contemporary feel, and claim a lot of space and light.

The ground floor at the junction of both the buildings leads into a courtyard and a garden – ‘Passage Malabar’ with an all-day-breakfast menu apart from salads, sandwiches, and rice dishes and their very own artisan bakery products. Trinity also has a small conference space on the ground floor of the main Bungalow and interestingly for a seven key hotel offers many sit-outs and family spaces, both indoors and outside.

As the other properties of Malabar Escapes, Trinity ensures that the hospitality is laced with enthusiasm, aiming to ensure everyone’s experience of this oasis of beauty is simultaneously unique and unforgettable.

Accommodation

Each room on the property are different from each other. The intrigue lies not only in the art alone, but additions like open-air bathrooms, and smaller delights like wooden Japanese sandals to ensure that the hard stones of the floor easier on the soles. The rooms are equipped with a TV, DVD player, safe, home-made toiletries, air-conditioning, mosquito repellent, minibar and coffee-making facilities.

Dining

Breakfast is laid out at the courtyard where delicious Indian or Continental breakfast is served. The terrace of the hotel is another atmospheric location for lunch and dinner. The casual deli and restaurant, Passage Malabar, is where you can fill up on typical Indian dishes, like chicken tiffin and vegetarian biryani, and international fare like Mediterranean charcuterie platters and Greek moussaka. Guests also hop over to Malabar junction addressed at the Malabar house, for a fine dining experience. Authentic Keralan and Mediterranean influenced cuisines are popular here.

Experiences

Fort Kochi is pretty doable on foot, but the tropical weather can be sapping at times. Guests like to borrow the hotel’s cycles and explore the surroundings and the monument trails with a handy guide. The streets mostly criss-cross each other in rectangles and the town is small enough to find your way back easily.

If you are looking for a more action packed day, then the hotel has a six-seat speedboat that can zip you to one its sister properties around. Daily Yoga sessions are help at the property, which you can extend to private classes if needed. Head over to Malabar House to use the pool and the spa.

Why we love this place

Every room at Trinity is unique, and the use of hydroelectric power, recycling where possible, and cleans organic detergents makes this a great pick for conscious travellers.

About your host

Trinity is one the five art-themed heritage properties of the Malabar Escapes group created by Joerg and Txuku 21 years ago. ‘Art’ is key to all the Malabar experiences and the works and antiques have been integrated as a part of the experience for the traveller. Malabar Escapes veers off the usual in decor but brings the traveller the true pulse of Keralan hospitality through food concepts, colour and culture.

Responsible/Sustainable Tourism

All the properties under Malabar Escapes are conscious on the community and heritage front. The amalgamation of art from around the world with Kerala’s classics is the chain’s way of keeping it alive. Trinity is addressed on a 150-year mansion that has been largely kept intact. Recycling, preservation of water, clean beauty products in the bathrooms and garbage disposal are integral to the operations at Trinity. The hospitality is gentle with a definitive human touch, and the staff is hired from around the town.

Our Recommendation

A private escape from Kochi's packed-streets during high season, Trinity is perfect to slow your stride and spend time just taking in the art deco mood and relaxed ambience of the hotel.
