Sited on top of a hill overlooking Jaipur city, the majestic 17th century Amber (pronounced Amer, with a silent ‘b’) represents a key phase in the development of a common Rajput-Mughal fort style. The fort was established in 1592 by Maharaja Man Singh and successive rulers added to the majestic structure. It was the capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs for over 700 years.
The stunning Diwan-i-Aam, the magnificent Ganesh Pol, Sukh Niwas, Jai Mahal and Jas Mandir take you back in time. One of the most popular and famous structures inside is the Sheesh Mahal, a room with walls and ceilings covered with small mirror fragments. Today, one can only imagine the magically kaleidoscopic sight it must have been, when reflecting candlelight.
From the vehicle drop off point at the base of the hill, we suggest you walk up or take the special Jeeps up to the pale golden fortress-palace instead of riding the elephants lined up as tourist ferries.
